Abstract
Effects of Benson Relaxation on Decreasing Dyspnea in Patients with COPD in dr. Ario Wirawan Pulmonary Hospital Salatiga Dyspnea is thecardinal symptom of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients and the main reason for patients seeking for the treatment. Dyspnea defined as a subjective experience of breathing discomfort. Benson relaxation is a combination of respiratory relaxation with patient confidence factors that is through spiritual words so that it can increase the comfort and ventilation of alveoli which can reduce dyspnea. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of benson relaxation on decreasing dyspnea in COPD patients. This study used a quasi experimental with a pre- post test control group design. The samples were 64 COPD patients, consisting of 32 patients in the intervention group who were receivedbenson relaxation intervention and 32 patients in the control group who were received hospital standard intervention. Samples were selected by consecutive sampling. Benson relaxation was done twice a day, morning and evening for three days.Data was taken in the morning 15 minutes before the benson relaxation and evening 15 minutes after benson relaxation every day. Data was analyzed using paired t test. The results of this study showed a decrease dyspnea scale from 3.74 to 2.64in the intervention group. The results of statistical tests in the intervention group obtained p value <0.001 for dyspneascale, p <0.001 for respiratory rate, p <0.001 for pulse rate, p = 0.066 for cystole, p = 0.274 for diastole and p <0.001 for oxygen saturation indicating that there were significant effects of benson relaxation on dyspnea, respiratory rate, pulse rate and oxygen saturation but there was no effect of benson relaxation on blood pressure. The study concluded that benson relaxation decrease the dyspnea of COPD patients. Based on the results of the study it is suggested that benson relaxation can be used as one of the nurse's interventions in nursing care for COPD patients. Keywords : Dyspnea, COPD, benson relaxation
