Abstract

The Experience of the Javanese Elderly in Facing Stress Due to Family Neglect xix + 99 pages + 4 tables + 7 schemes + 14 appendixes Neglect of the elderly is one of the global issues in health field which can cause stress as one of the negative impacts. Stress experience on the elderly since the neglect in a Javanese culture is a unique phenomenon because elder neglect was not suitable for the Javanese culture. The qualitative study aimed to describe the experiences of Javanese elderly facing stress caused of family neglect. Method of this study used descriptive phenomenological. The research sample was the elderly of Java facing stress and family neglect among 7 participants. Sample selection was purposive sampling. Collecting research data use semi structure interview and observation. The analyzed data research was used Colaizzi’s method. There were 7 themes as the research results: (1) The perception was they felt to be abandoned and treated like a household, (2) Some types of the elder neglect were physical, physiological, and financial neglect, (3) The perception about factors that causing the neglect were anger emotion of caregiver, unemployment of caregiver, and economic burden of caregiver, (4) The responses of those elderly were positive and negative responses, (5) Coping response of stress were positive and negative coping and happy feelings.(6) Support for elderly to solve their problem was loved by children, getting money and helping from their neighbors, (7) The expectation of Javanese elderly related to their relationship between parents and their children, they was happy if they had a harmonious family and children respected them. Based on the research, it could be concluded that neglect behaviour response among the elderly were difference each participants. Nevertheless, all of participants use the coping with Javanese values. This study suggested that it could be useful for community nursing to prevent the elderly neglect and perform stress management based on the Javanese culture.
