Abstract

Description of Nurses’ Attitudes toward Mental Illness at Dr. Amino Gondohutomo Mental Hospital Central Java Province lxx + 97 Pages + 15 Tables + 2 Pictures + 13 Attachments Nurses are health care providers who play a role in the care and rehabilitation of people with mental illness. The attitude of nurses toward mental illness is a determinant of the quality of care for clients with mental illness. This study aims to describe the nurses' attitudes toward mental illness. The research method used is descriptive research design with a survey approach. This study was conducted on 143 nurses at Dr. Amino Gondohutomo Mental Hospital Central Java Province using a purposive sampling technique by considering the inclusion criteria. The research instrument used was the CAMI (Community Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill) questionnaire, which contained 40 items of statements consisting of 20 pro statements and 20 counter statements. There are four attitude subscales in the CAMI questionnaire, namely authoritarian, benevolence, social restrictiveness, and community mental health ideology. The analysis used is the univariate analysis with frequency distribution. The results of this study show that 64.3% of respondents were pro to authoritarian, 54.5% of respondents were pro toward social restrictiveness, 54.5% of respondents were pro to benevolent, and 60.1% of respondents were pro to community mental health ideology. Pro attitudes toward the four attitude subscales show a combination of positive and negative attitudes toward mental illness. The results of this study recommend that the mental hospital institution needs to conduct continuing education programs, seminars, and training for mental health nurses to improve the nurses’ positive attitudes to mental illness.
