Abstract

Resilience defines as the process of bouncing back from adversity, threats, and stressful situation. Resilience level can be used to determine the ability of schizophrenic patients to handle traumatic events or trauma. The previous studies mentioned that schizophrenic patients have a lower level of resilience compared to their unaffected family members and the healthy population. This study aims to describe the level of resilience and the demographic characteristics of schizophrenic patients in Psychiatric Hospital Central Java Province. This study conducted to 132 schizophrenic patients meeting the criteria for living in inpatient wards, aged between 18-60 years old and were in stable condition. The respondents were recruited using a non-probability sampling technique, and the data were collected using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 (CD-RISC 10). The result of this study showed that the majority of respondents were aged between 18-44 (83,3%), male (70,5%), single (57,6%), graduated from junior high school (34,1%), unemployed (57,6%), Moslem (97%), and living with family (93,2%). Most of them did not have any family members who experience a mental health problem and never experienced a traumatic event previously. Sixty-eight point two percent of schizophrenic patients showed a low level of resilience due to the low level of education, unemployed, and lived with a family who might have socioeconomic problems. Future study is needed to figure out the factors related to the level of resilience and nursing interventions to enhance the level of resilience.
