Abstract

Riskesdas 2018 data showed that cancer prevalence in Indonesia has increased from 1.4% to 1.8% with 9.3% of deaths from colon cancer. One of the medical treatment for colon cancer is surgery by making a colostomy. That treatment can have an impact both on the physical and psychological, especially the body image. Poor assessment of body image can have a negative impact on some aspects of a patient's life, for physical, social, psychological and sexual, which will affect patient’s quality of life. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between body image and the quality of life of colon cancer patients who have colostomy in Dr Kariadi Hospital Semarang. Descriptive correlative study, cross sectional approach and accidental sampling technique was conducted by using questionnaire among 49 totally selected respondents. Data collection using the Body Image Scale (BIS) questionnaire, Quality of Life Questionnaire C-30 (QLQ C-30) and Quality of Life Questionnaire CR-29 (QLQ CR-29). The results of the analysis showed that 55.1% of respondents had a negative body image and 44.9% of respondents had a positive body image. The result of quality of life analysis showed that 4.1% of respondents had good quality of life, 73.5% had moderate quality of life and 22.4% of respondents had poor quality of life. This study also indicated that there was a correlation between body image and quality of life with X2 of 7,351, greater than X2 table 5,991 with p value 0.007 <ᾳ (0.05) and odds ratio 12,353. The results of this study can be used as a basis for nurses and health professionals to improve therapeutic communication in providing nursing care holistically so that it can improve body image and quality of life of patients with colon cancer who have colostomy.
