Abstract
Fadloly, Maulana Adieb. 2019. Cultural Hybridity in The Main Character of Bumi Manusia‟s Book by Pramoedya Ananta Toer (Postcolonialism Study). A Research Paper (S1). Faculty of Humanities Diponegoro University Semarang. First academic advisor Dr. Redyanto Noor, M.Hum., and second academic advisor Drs. Mulyo Hadi Purnomo, M.Hum. The material object of this research is Bumi Manusia book by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The purposes of this research are to describe the intrinsic elements and reveal the cultural hybridity in the main character of Bumi Manusia‟s book. Writer uses the structural theory to explain the book‟s additional elements (character and characterization, storyline and background). Other than that, writer also uses the postcolonialism theory to review the cultural hybridity in the main character. This research uses qualitative method according to the structural and postcolonialism theories. The structural analysis results showed that Bumi Manusia book has fifteen characters, divided into one main character and fourteen additional characters. Based on the postcolonialism analysis results, character Minke experienced cultural hybridity by carrying out mimicry actions, then later he resisted the existence of injustices in colonial life. Minke, initially began to imitate European culture through the H.B.S school which he attended, then later he resisted the European nation through the knowledge he had while studying at H.B.S. school. But in the end, the resistance failed because Europeans were stronger than Indigenous, especially in terms of law. The postcolonialism analysis showed that Minke in the Bumi Manusia‟s book, experienced the cultural hybridity by looking at the following four factors: the western and eastern worlds, colonialism, cultural hybridity and mimicry, and resistance. Kata Kunci : Indigenous, structure, postcolonialism, cultural hybridity.
