Abstract
Empathy is important for nursing specially for nursing students because it has many benefits, that is optimize nursing care for the patient’s, improve interpersonal relationship, help resolve patient problems, and improve prosocial behavior. Empathy of undergraduate nursing students was shows that 43,8% students have poor empathy ability. The aim of the study is to find out the description of empathy for professional nursing students in of Diponegoro University. A descriptive-survey research design was utilized, that used JSPE-R Version (Jeffersen Scale of Physician Empathy–Nursing Student Version R) questionnaire. The population in this study was professional nursing students in Nursing Department of Diponegoro University. The sample size in this study was 119 students in the ners professional program taken by total sampling technique. Empathy ability of professional nursing program students mostly have good empathy by 51.3% and 48.7% have poor empathy ability. Empathy component which has a high average empathy value was perspective taking component compared to compassionate care and standing of the patient’s shoes. Therefore, nursing students also need to increase their empathy skills using the empathic care training method, social support training, and mindfulness training in improving empathy skills.
