Abstract
This article deals with several factors that influence the growth of Indonesian Communist Party (PKI-Partai Komunis Indonesia) in a reformed Moslem area and it also discussess the relation between Indonesian Communist Party sympathizers and the people of Muhammadiyah in Kotagede araund the period of 1920s-1965. The relatively tranquil condition as the result of the cooperative competition among political parties supported by the distinctive character of Muhammadiyah had enabled Indonesian Communist Party to strengthen its position and it finally became the biggest political party in Kotagede since 1960. Eventhough Muhammadiyah is generally known as a reformed Moslem organization that holds high Al Quran and Hadist as a guidance of life, the people of Muhammadiyah tend to propose the values and moral ethics of the nobels which particulary control their emotion and behaviour in their social encounter. It explainded the condition in Kotagede which was consedered calm and quiet although the relation between Indonesia Communist Party and Muhammadiyayh in the period discussed in this paper was apparenly full of conflicts and resistance.
