ABSTRACT Jaizah, Trifunny. 2019. “Explicit and Implicit Meaning of Japanese Proverbs that Formed of the Word ‘Neko’” A Thesis, Department of Japanese Language and Culture Studies, Faculty of Humanity, Diponegoro University. The Advisor Elizabeth Ika Hesti ANR, S.S, M.Hum. This study analyze the explicit meaning and implicit meaning of Japanese proverbs that formed of the word ‘neko’. This study aim to describe the meaning of Japanese proverbs that formed from the word of neko and divide into classifications based on the content. This study using the data obtained from the proverb dictionaries and Japanese websites. The data collected using the references technique, by making the written sources as the data. This study also analyze the explicit meaning and implicit meaning of Japanese proverbs that containing the word ‘neko’ as well as classifies based on the meaning contents according to the theory of Morikuni Honami. The analysis results were presented informally by using the right words. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that from all the data included, 22 proverbs that formed of the word ‘neko’. The proverbs that formed of the word ‘neko’ classified into 4 type based on its meaning contents. Keywords: Kotowaza, neko, meaning
