Abstract

ABSTRACT Breast cancer patients has pain at moderate to high levels. Effective pain management needs to be done so that the pain does not interfere with the activity and cause anxiety to the patient. The purpose of this study was to describe the management of pain strategies for breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Tugurejo General Hospital and Moewardi Regional Hospital. This type of research is quantitative with a descriptive survey approach. Sampling was done using accidental sampling with a total of 80 respondents in Tugurejo Hospital and 40 respondents in Moewardi Hospital who underwent chemotherapy from April to May 2017. The results of this study showed the highest patient pain scale on a scale of 4-7 and the lowest on a scale of 0- 3. 78 patients (65%) did their own pain management. Management that was often done by patients was dzikir / pray (190 patients, 91%), discuss with family and did all environmental management with 106 people (88.33%) prefer bright lighting. Meanwhile no patients used opioid or non-opioid drugs in pharmacological management. The implementation of pain management was carried out at home and in the hospital, except discussions with doctors and nurses were almost always done in the hospital. Reasons for choosing management based on customs (n = 118 people, 98.33%). The conclusion of the study was that the management of patient pain strategies is combining non-pharmacological, environmental and social management. Suggestions for research are that families are expected to continue to play a role in helping, assisting and motivating patients in pain management.
