Abstract

Elderly people who experience the aging process will experience changes in the integumentary system. This causes several effects such as slowing of the wound healing, decreasing the function of thermoregulation and decreasing the inflammatory response. The body's immunity ability against infection also decreases along with increasing age including the speed of the immune response. Efforts are needed to improve the health of the elderly one of the way to do it is by maintaining personal hygiene. Personal hygiene is very important in preventing skin diseases, given the source of infection can arise due to lack of cleanliness. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of skin health knowledge with personal hygiene in the elderly. The type of research is descriptive correlational with a cross sectional approach. This research was conducted on Bajomulyo Village, Juwana Subdistrict, Pati Regency in December 2018. The sample of this study was 185 elderly people using the Quota Sampling technique. The instrument used was questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Pearson Correlation test. The results showed that there was a significant relationship (p = 0,000) between skin health knowledge and personal hygiene of the elderly with sufficient correlation (0.384) and positive direction. The results of this study recommend that elderly people improve their skin health knowledge and the application of personal hygiene to improve their quality of life.Elderly people who experience the aging process will experience changes in the integumentary system.
