Abstract

ABSTRACT Puspitawati, Yenny. 2019. “Discourse Analysis: Cohesion and Coherence of the Yomiuri Newspaper Sports Rubric January 1, 2018 Edition”. Thesis, Department of Japanese Language dan Culture, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University. The Advisor:Elizabeth Ika Hesti ANR, S.S., M.Hum. This research aims to describe cohesion marker and coherension marker, and analyze cohesiveness and discourse coherence. The data in this study were taken from the sports section of the January 1, 2018 edition of the Yomiuri newspaper. Data retrieval method in this thesis uses referral method, using tapping technique as a basic technique, and recording technique as its advanced technique. Furthermore, in the data analysis phase, using the matching method with the determining element sorting technique. On the other hand, using descriptive method to analyze and descripe the data. Whereas in presenting data, it uses informal methods. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that there are 57 data from 10 cohesion markers, namely: reference, substitution, ellipse, conjunction, repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, and collocation. Then there are 10 data from 3 coherence markers, namely: resistance relations, more relationships, and time relationships. With the existence of markers of cohesion and coherence found, proving that the discourse contained in the sports section of the Yomiuri newspaper, January 1, 2018 Edition is a cohesive and coherent discourse.
