Abstract

ABSTRACT Caring behavior as the essence of nursing is an action based on caring, empathy, sensitivity and responsibility in developing relationship between nurses and patients while providing nursing care which is expected to improve the quality of nursing care, physical condition of patients, provide calmness for the family of patients and satisfaction for nurses. The aim of this research was to described nurse’s caring behavior in general and based on subvariables in Emergency Room of Hospital in Semarang. This study used a quantitative descriptive method with a survey approach. The samples of this research are 165 respondents were taken by accidental sampling. Data was retrievaled using a questionnaire and analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results showed that 138 respondent (83.64%) assessed nurse’s caring behavior in the Emergency Room of Hospital in Semarang were good. However, based on the patient's assessment of each statement showed that there were several aspects of affective and instrumental caring behavior nurses were still lacking such as introduced their names to patients, encouraged patients to think positively and found a positive side to deal with their illness and helped patient’s self care before the patient can do it by themself. Making caring behavior as one of the standards in performance appraisal for nurses and increasing reinforcement for thinking positively in dealing with the disease can be solutions to improve nurse’s caring behavior to patients.
