Abstract

Spiritual care competence is the application of knowledge, abilities, and skills in providing spiritual care to patients. Spiritual care competencies are necessary so that nurses are able to provide interventions which respond to spiritual needs, self-esteem, and faith to accelerate the healing process of the patients. This study aimed to describe the nurses' competencies in providing spiritual care to patients. This study was a quantitative descriptive study with survey method. The samples were 104 nurses at inpatient units recruited using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Nurses’ Questionnaire Professional Competence in Spiritual Care which consisted of 38 statements. The results showed that 58.7% of nurses had a moderate level and 41.3% had a professional level of competencies in providing spiritual care to patients. The study also showed that the domain of spiritual care which needs to be improved is the assessment and implementation of spiritual care, i.e., at a moderate level of 56.7%. The domain of human value was well implemented and showed a professional level of 93.3%. It is expected that the nursing profession, hospital management, educational institutions, and further studies could play roles in increasing the nurses’ competence in spiritual care. The hospital management could apply standard operational policies for the implementation of spiritual care by nurses and other multidisciplinary teams.
