Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a degenerative disease which is still being a health problem in Indonesia. Peer education as an effort in diabetes management can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, diabetes distress, and increase knowledge, self management and quality of life for people with type 2 DM. However, research related to peer education on self care is still limited. The study aimed to determine the effect of peer education on self-care activities in type 2 diabetes mellitus in Puskesmas Pandak I and II. This study was a quasi-experimental study with pre- test−post test control design and used total sampling. The samples used were 60 respondents (34 in peer education group and 26 in control group). Data were analysis technique used independent t-test with a significance level of p <0.05. Results showed that there was a significant enhancement in self-care activities. Statistical analyzed used independent t-test found there were significant differences in the value of self-care activities between peer education group and control group among type 2 diabetes mellitus diabetes (p=0.001 <0.005). Peer education could improve self-care activities for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Puskesmas Pandak I and Pandak II. Puskesmas Pandak can synergize and facilitate peer educators in implementing peer education so that it can be implemented sustainably
