Abstract

Tuberculosis ranks fourth in the disease suffered by convicts who live in the correctional facility; this shows that TB is a disease that is a health problem in the correctional facility. The incidence of TB in the correctional facility ranges from 5 to 70 times higher than the general population outside the correctional facility. Detecting cases and the successful treatment of TB disease are the core elements in preventing and controlling TB in the correctional facility. If done immediately, effectively and systematically these elements can reduce the incidence of tuberculosis and reduce the prevalence of tuberculosis and death. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of peer education on the male inmates in undergoing sputum tuberculosis examination. The study design used quasy experiment with pre – post test by using control group. The number of samples is 35. Peer education training was given to the intervention group by selecting peer educators who had been given training. The data were analyzed by using Wilcoxon and Mann – Whitney test. The results of the study showed that there was an influence of peer education toward the convict’s intention to carry out sputum tuberculosis examination characterized by p value = 0,000 (p value <0.05). There is an influence of Peer education on WBP's intention to carry out sputum tuberculosis examination. Nurses in the correctional facility need to establish peer education cadres in each block in the correctional facility to facilitate the dissemination of health information to the convict in the correctional facility.
