Abstract

Head injury is one of the main causes of death in the world. About 1.5 million people in the world die of head injuries and 50% of deaths occur in the first 2 hours after injury, one of which is affected by the inaccuracy of the initial treatment in the emergency department. This involves the role of emergency nurses in carrying out initial assessment and treatment of head injury patients, but there are some nurses who have not taken action according to the principles of initial head injury management. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of nurses' actions in the management of head injuries in hospital emergency departments. This research was a quantitative descriptive survey research, with the research instrument was a questionnaire on the action of nurses in the management of head injuries in the ED. The sampling technique used a total sampling technique with a sample of 65 nurses who worked in the Dr. Moewardi Surakarta and Tugurejo Hospital Semarang. The results of this study indicated that the majority of respondents (55.4%) fall into the category of good action and 44.6% fall into the category of bad actions. All aspects of the management of head injury in the ED were airway management and cervical bone protection, oxygenation and ventilation, circulation and fluid balance, as well as disability and intracranial pressure management are in the good category.
