Abstract
Background: Nurses have an important role in patient safety so that education is given since students. Student's self-perception in learning needs to be known to identify deficiencies and get balance skills before enter practical work area. Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe patient safety competence through self – assessment method among nursing student. Methods: Descriptive survey using qualitative method was used in the study. 181 participants were evaluated using Health Professional Education in Patient safety Survey (H-PEPSS). The instrument was used to evaluate patient safety competence in classroom and clinical learning. Results: Most of students who participate in this study were woman, aged 21 years old, studied in forth year (2014). Most of students reported good self-perception patient safety competence in classroom and clinical learning. Students reported highest self-perception in manage safety risk on classroom learning. Communicating was rated highly in clinical settings. While, clinical safety was rated lower in classroom and clinical learning. Conclutions: There needs attention regarding patient safety competency material for teaching and regular evaluation for students.
