Abstract

Eel is a high economic value aquaculture commodity of Indonesia due to decreasing the global eel seeds production in Europe, Japan, Korea and China. Indonesia has a potency to be the biggest producer of eel in the world where the eel seeds are almost available in over the costal water of Indonesia. Eel has an unique and nice taste with high nutrition contents (Vitamin, EPA, DHA), so that the eel fleshs are loved by Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Indonesia has 7 eel species (Anguilla celebensis, Anguilla borneensis, Anguilla interioris, Anguilla obscura, Anguilla bicolor pasifica, Anguilla bicolor bicolor, and Anguilla marmorata) of 19 eel species total in the world. Indonesia so far has not have an artificial propagation technology yet for eel. All eel seeds production is obtained from fishing activity only. Artificial feeds for glass eel to elver stadia are still problem to produce and this has resulted in decreasing the eel aquaculture development in Indonesia. A good applied eel aquaculture technology is the key for getting a succes of eel farming from glass eel, elver to adult (200-250 g). Japan is one of countries that leading in intensive eel aquaculture with high investation in the world. The EPA and DHA contents of eels are higher (742 mg/100 g and 1,337 mg/100 g) than those of salmon (492 mg/100 g and 820 mg/100 g). This lead that the eel aquaculture is very prospectus and Indonesia has a potency to be leader in the production of cultured eels in the world
