Abstract

Postoperative anxiety causes a physiological and psychological response. This response will make person difficulties to move and desire certain activities including activity of daily living (ADL). The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between anxiety and independence of ADL major postoperative patients. This study was a non-experimental quantitative study with a prospective cohort study. Consecutive sampling was used to recruit the samples with the inclusion criteria for first surgery patients, aged 21-65 years, and compos mentis awareness. Data were collected using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and the Barthel Index was conducted on the 1st and 3rd days. Data were analyzed using a bivariate analysis of Spearman. A total of 58 respondents participated in the study. The result show that the 1st day of 65.5% felt moderate and 3rd day as much as 93.1% mild anxiety. On 1st day shows 63.8% depending on part and 3rd day 69.0% independent in ADL fulfillment. The result of bivariate analysis between of anxiety and ADL independence in 1st day yielded p-value = 0.001, r = -0.608 and 3rd day p-value = 0.001, r = -0.530. The study concluded that there was a relation between anxiety and independence of ADL. The correlate was negative in which higher anxiety will make the lower the independence in performing daily activities. Based on the results of this study, that nurses can overcome patients' postoperative anxiety and increase independent in ADL fulfillment.
