Abstract
Dementia is a central nervous system disorder that affects the progressive decline in intellectual function. Changes in physical, cognitive, and psychosocial function made elderly require a long-term care with caregiver’s help. Caregiver in caring elderly with dementia at Nursing Homes was experiencing various burden its associated with care’s role and job demands that impact on quality of life. This study was quantitative research with descriptive study design. Subject in this study involved 60 respondents consist of caregivers in Nursing Homes which is in fulfilling with inclusion criteria with total sampling technique. The results of this study showed that all caregivers are middle-aged, more than half are female and have secondary education, caregiver’s majority were civil servants, 58.3% caregiver cares for the elderly for less than 4 (four) hours per day, light and medium burden was experienced by 40% caregiver, and 55% caregiver had poor quality of life. Treatment of elderly dementia might lead to increased burden and decreased quality of life of caregiver. Therefore, counseling group interventions such as group therapy were needed to reduce the burden and the quality of life of caregiver increases when treating elderly with dementia in Nursing Home.
