Abstract

Rapid population growth in major cities has implications for many aspects of life, one of which is transportation.Transportation issues and their derivative impacts occur in several cities in Indonesia. The basic problem related to transportation problem is the traffic demand that exceeds the provision of road space.Semarang, the capital city of Central Java Province, has been struggling to overcome this municipal transportation issue. One of the government policies is by providing public transportation through Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Using ordinary least square and binary logistic regression, this study aims to analyse factors affecting on the demand for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Independent variables namelyas income, private motorbike or car ownership, and service quality are expected to explain the demand for BRT. This study uses primary data obtained from 100 respondents based on Purposive Sampling. The result shows that the major users of the BRT are low level income households. The OLS estimation shows that price is sensitive to the demand for BRT. An increase in the BRT price will result in higher probability of the BRT users to switch from BRT to other means of transportation. The level of income and the private motorbike ownership have negative impact on the demand for BRT. Service quality has positive impact on the demand for BRT. Ownership of four-wheeled private vehicles has no effect on the demand for BRT. Thus, the government is expected to keep the price level so that BRT Trans Semarang remains affordable to all levels of society. In addition, the government is also expected to maintain the quality of services provided.
