Abstract
By dismantling authoritarian regimes through democratic struggle and electing progressive presidents from among civilian, non-military candidates, Korean society has moved further forward in democratisation. This process has been accompanied by the rise of a civil society. Paradoxically, however, it has been diagnosed as a society that is more fragmented where the division of political ideas between "progressives" and "conservatives" has gradually and markedly sharpered.
