Abstract

Effects of Natural Restorative Environment on Increasing Attention and Mood in Post-Stroke Patients at the Hospital xix + 89 pages + 10 tables + 5 figures + 26 appendixes Stroke is a condition caused by the disruption of cerebral blood flow that leads to neurological damage. This neurological damage can cause both physical problems such as temporary disabilityand psychological problems such as decreased attention and mood. The decrease in attention and mood in post-stroke patients has become a problem in the hospital due to the unavailability of early assessment of attention and mood disorder. Therefore, it can be saidthat the role of nurses in providing care has not been holistic. A steady decline in attention and mood in post-stroke will have an impact on the process of disease recovery, instability, and poor and decreased work performance. Exposure to natural environment and music (natural restorative environment) is evident to restore the ability to focus attention and generate opportunities for positive moods. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of natural restorative environment on increasing attention and mood in post-stroke patients. This study was a quasi-experiment using pretest-posttest with control group design. The population was stroke patients undergoing treatment in the hospital. The samples were 38 patients in each intervention group and control group selected using purposive sampling technique. The intervention group received natural restorative environment twice a day for three days, while the control group received standard hospital treatment. A pretest and posttest on the level of attention and mood during hospitalization were given to patients both in the intervention group and control group before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using three types of test, i.e., paired t-test, Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney U test. The results showed that the level of attention and mood in post-stroke patients increased in the intervention group as evidenced by p-value = 0.000 regarding attention and p-value = 0.000 regarding mood. The natural restorative environment intervention could increase the attention and mood in post-stroke patients.
