Teenager parents are required to divert their energy from the task of internalizing an identity to the task of raising children. Teenage mothers are cognitively and emotionally unprepared for parenting tasks. This study aimed to know the experiences of teenage mothers in infancy parenting. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological design with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach and was conducted in the work area of Gunung Pati public health center from December 2017 to January 2018. This study used five main participants selected using a purposive sampling technique with the inclusion criteria of mothers aged ≤ 20 years, parenting a first child of infant age, and living in a similar home with their parents. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The credibility of the study was achieved by triangulation of the study resources through interviews with mothers of the main participants. The results showed that all the five participants revealed various experiences in their infancy parenting, depending on the situation that each mother experienced. This study revealed two main themes, i.e., (1) the achievement of role of teenage mothers in their infancy parenting, as identified in 6 super-ordinate themes, i.e., the acceptance of mother role, social support, childcare stress, maternal history during pregnancy, maternal history during labor, and the closeness of relationships, and (2) the ability of teenage mothers in infancy parenting as identified in six super-ordinate themes, i.e., maternal knowledge of parenting, implementation of infancy parenting, mothers’ parenting experiences, child growth and development, mothers’ future hopes, and barriers to parenting. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that there are special programs for teenage mothers, in which the health workers can play their role to support mothers to obtain optimal education and skills in parenting.
