Abstract

Stages of Grief and Depression in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus xvii + 131 pages + 21 tables + 13 figures + 9 appendixes Patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) often fail in going through the stages of grief, which can lead to depression. Diabetic patients who experience depression tend to be less active in the management of their DM, resulting in complications and death. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the stages of grief and depression in patients with diabetes. This study used a cross-sectional design with an explanatory study approach. A consecutive sampling technique was used to select the samples of 302 patients with diabetes. Data were collected using Acceptance of Disease and Impairments Questionnaire and Beck Depression Inventory, and were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses. The results showed that the majority of respondents were female (75.2%), married (85.8%), and had comorbidities (80.8%). Patients with diabetes who had not reached the stage of acceptance was 51% and those who had depression was 48.3%. Such factors as gender, age, education, duration of suffering from DM, comorbidities, social support, and blood sugar levels were indicated to have effects on the ability of patients with diabetes to complete the stages of grief. Characteristics of sociodemography which had a significant correlation with depression were marital status, comorbidities, and blood sugar levels. There was a correlation between stages of grief and depression in patients with diabetes. It was predicted that the strongest and influential stage of depression was acceptance. Decreasing level of acceptance will increase the depression by 0.141. This study concluded that stages of grief had a correlation and is predicted to contribute to trigger depression in patients with diabetes. Therefore, appropriate interventions are required for patients with diabetes to go through the stages of grief with adaptive coping, so as to prevent the occurence of depression.
