Abstract

In the practice of community nursing, nurses at public health centers work to achieve health for all status with no exception to people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS). These community nurses play a role in facilitating and directing the patients’copingand providing support so that people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) can adapt themselves to their illness. In caring for PLWHA, nurses will certainly get different experiences. It is expected that the nurses’ experiences can be a valuable input for improving the quality of care for PLWHA. This study aimed to describe the experiences of community nurses in caring for PLWHA. This study was qualitative research with a phenomenological approach and was conducted at Halmahera Public Health Center in Semarang city. The samples were four main informants and three triangulation informants who were purposively selected based on the inclusion criteria. The informants were nurses who provided care to PLWHA. In this study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis method. The results identified three themes: basic competence of community nurses in caring for PLWHA, roles of community nurses in caring for PLWHA, and community nurses’ problems in caring for PLWHA. Based on the findings, it was concluded that community nurses were expected to have the ability of knowledge, attitudes, and communication in caring for PLWHA. Also, the role of community nurses could be optimal if they improve their knowledge. Furthermore, the problems the nurses encounter could also be resolvedwhen they have integrity in caring for PLWHA. Therefore, it is expected that the community nurses continuously improve their competence. Keywords: Nursing care, PLWHA, experience, nurses’ roles References: 127(2000-2018)
