Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze and to have a deeper understanding of translation strategies in dealing with metaphor equivalence between English and Indonesia. The data of metaphors were collected through note taking of metaphs in Yann Mertel’s Life of Pi novel, translated into Indonesian by Tanti Lesmana entitled 'Kisah Pi'. The research method used in this research was content text analysis, a type of qualitative descriptive method. 85 data of metaphors were collected from the novel which were contrastively analysed by comparing semantic or contextual meanings to reveal the strategy. The data were further analysed using contrastive method by comparing lexical or contextual meanings to reveal the equivalence. The results show the following: the strategy most frequently used by the translator is translating metaphors to non- figurative expression (40%), followed by translating metaphor to different metaphor with the same meaning (28,2%), preserving the same metaphore (28,2%), and the last, translating metaphor to simile (3,6%). This reseach proved that translator had overall managed to deal with text equivalence between the source and target text by maximising transposition and modulation techniques which helped create naturalness of the target text making it sensically close to the source text.
