Abstract

Hidayat, Irman. 2018. “Intertextuality of Eka Kurniawan’s Four Novels with Asmaraman S. Kho Ping Hoo’s Martial Art Stories”. Mentored by Drs. M. Muzakka, M.Hum. and Fajrul Falah S.Hum, M.Hum. Department of Indonesian Language and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Science, Diponegoro University. The material object of this research are Eka Kurniawan’s four novels, which are Cantik itu Luka (2002), Lelaki Harimau (2004), Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas (2014), and O (2016); also two martial art stories by Asmaraman S. Kho Ping Hoo, which are Bu Kek Siansu (1973), and Kemelut di Mojopahit (1974). This research focus on intertextual relationship between Eka Kurniawan’s novels with Asmaraman S. Kho Ping Hoo’s martial art stories. Eka Kurniawan once cited that Asmaraman S. Kho Ping Hoo’s martial art stories gave a big influences on his works and even his life. This research aims to discover intertextual relationship between the works of both authors based on themes, settings, character and characterization, and plots. The methods used in this research are structural of fiction methods and intertextual method. Structural fiction method used to uncover four novels by Eka Kurniawan and two martial art stories by Asmaraman S. Kho Ping Hoo to find the themes, plots, characters and characterization, and settings of those works. Whereas intertextual method used to find connection between the works of both authors by compare them. From the result of this study it is known that Eka Kurniawan’s novels are influenced by Asmaraman S. Kho Ping Hoo’s martial art stories although partially. The similiar elements such as theme and main characters’ characterization indicated the similiarity. While for the elements such as plot and setting, there are no similiarity between the works of both authors. This result have proven Eka Kurniawan’s claim that his novels are influenced by Asmaraman S. Kho Ping Hoo’s martial art stories.
