Abstract
ABSTRACT Pertiwi, Diah Mulya. 2017. “Structure and Meaning of Japanese Tsumori Modality”. Thesis. Department of Japanese Studies, Faculty of Humanities. Diponegoro University. Thesis supervisor Lina Rosliana, S.S., M.Hum. This thesis discusses about “Structure and Meaning of Japanese Tsumori Modality”. The purpose of this thesis are to describe the structure; it also to explain about the meaning of Japanese tsumori modality. The data of this research obtained from a online short stories “Aozora Bunko” and Online Japanese Newspaper “Asahi Shinbun”. The data were collected using note taking technique. The author used agih method to analyze the structure and the meaning of words; and the results of analysis are expressed in an informal way using ordinary words. Based on the data analysis, the result showed that the tsumori modality as one of ishi modality that can be attached to verbs, adjectives or nouns. Tsumori is used to reveal the presence or absence of a person's intention to do a thing and whether the intention is accomplished or not, and indicate a belief and desire someone will a thing or action taken.
