Abstract
ABSTRACT Nabila, Salma, 2018. “Gender Inequality in the Short Story Nigorie「にごりえ」Writenby Higuchi Ichiyou, Feminism Approach”, Thesis, Japanese Language and Culture, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Consultant: Fajria Noviana, S.S., M.Hum. The purpose of this research is to describe gender inequality against women in Japan that exists in the short story entitled Nigorie writtenby Higuchi Ichiyou. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive library method. The theory used to analyse is Feminism and the Approach is Structuralism. Structuralism is used to analyse intrinsic elements included in the facts of the story consisting of character and characterization, plot, and setting. Meanwhile, Feminism Theory is used to analyse gender inequality against women in Japan that exists in this story. I find in this research that gender inequality against women in Japan that exists in this story entitled Nigorie is related to the whole of events, the characteristic of the characters, and the background of the story. Gender inequality that exists in this story afflicts the main character and the other women characters who work in brothel such as negative labelling and violence in the form of prostitution. Moreover, impoverishment, placement in less importance position, and excessive workload also afflict the woman characters in their household caused by patriarchy existed in Japan. In short, gender inequality in this story entitled Nigorie is caused by patriarchy that exists in Japan and manifested into marginalization or impoverishment and subordination or placement in less importance position, stereotype or negative labelling, violence in the form of prostitution, and excessive workload; they all afflict upon the women characters.
