ABSTRACT Sujito, Eka Safitri. 2017. “Mekanisme Pertahanan Ego Tokoh Utama dalam Novel Iwo Jima Kara No Tegami Karya Yamashita Aiiri Sebuah Kajian Psikoanalisis Sastra”. A thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirement for S-I Degree Japanese Department, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University, Semarang. First Advisor Drs. Redyanto Noor, M.Hum. Second Advisor Yuliani Rahmah, S.Pd, M.Hum. Novel Iwo Jima Kara No Tegami by Yamashita Aiiri tells about the war maintains the island of Iwo Jima and a man named Saigo. Saigo is the main character described as a figure of patriotism, scepticism and fighting for his family. During the war to defending Iwo Jima island, Saigo is facing all kinds of conflict and doing an ego defense mechanism to survive. The purpose of this study is to explain the elements of story structure builders and explaining the ego defense mechanisms by the main character. The method used in this research is the method of sociology of literature by using a psychological approach of literature, and psychoanalysis to describe the behavior of the main character that should doing the self-defense to survive. The theory of fiction structure is used to explain the elements of story structure builders, and the theory of psychoanalysis by Sarnoff is used to reveal the mechanism of ego defense carried out by the main character. The results of the analysis, Saigo as the main character is doing 3 motif; biogenetic, sosiogenetic and teogenetic. Moreover, Saigo also facing so many conflicts. To deal with the conflict, Saigo is doing 5 types of ego defense mechanisms; repression, apathy, rationalization, projection and identification.
