Abstract
Pesantren is an age old tradition in Indonesia that started when Islam leaders built schools to spread Islam. Traditional pesantren usually grow along with the environment around them, significantly influencing the life of people around it. Pesantren Al-Munawwirin Krapyak Kulon is no different, as it is the main catalyst for the development of Krapyak Kulon in general. This research aims to discover the structure and identity of Krapyak Kulon as an area heavily infiltrated with pesantren culture. Some of the theories to analyze the structure and identity are the urban design theory, hierarchy and pattern theory, theory of identity of an environment, and theory of Islamic architecture and planning. In order to fulfill the purpose of the research, qualitative rationalistic method is used by interviewing key person to obtain data, as well as field survey and purposeful sampling with open questions. This research discovers that Pesantren Al-Munawwir affects Krapyak Kulon’s condition due to its strong socio cultural presence. It alters the urban hierarchy of the environment, and shifting the center of activity pattern towards the pesantren. Life in Krapyak Kulon is very much associated with pesantren and the identity is simply inseparable.
