Abstract
The SBAR method helps nurses in delivering information. Inaccurate handovers during a shift change can have a serious impact on patients, in which nearly 70% of sentinel events, i.e., events which result in death or serious injury in the hospital, occur due to poor communication. An optimal development of human resources can be facilitated through coaching. Coaching is the best direct method of supervision from managers and directional discussions and supervisory activities to learn to solve problems or perform better tasks, as well as develop nursing leadership cultures in clinical settings. This study aimed to analyze coaching methods to improve the implementation of SBAR communication on staff nurses’ handovers. This study was a quasi-experiment research of pre and post design with a control group. The samples were 27 staff nurses in Dr. Moewardi hospitalas the intervention group, and 27 staff nurses in Dr. Ario Wirawan as the control group, and were recruited using consecutive sampling technique. The measurement of SBAR implementation in handovers was carried out using the observation sheets. Data were analyzed using Friedman test. The results showed an increase in coaching ability among the nurses in the intervention group, and on the other hand, the study found no improvement of coaching ability in the control group. There was a difference of SBAR before and after the implementation of coaching by the head nurses in the intervention group with a p-value <0.001. Meanwhile, in the control group, there was an increase of SBAR, but not yet significant, in handovers with a p-value of 0.174. The ability of coaching of head nurses could improve the implementation of SBAR on the nurses’ handovers. Keywords: Coaching, nurse, SBAR, handover References: 55 (2002 - 2016)
