Abstract

Indonesia is a state which consisting of various tribe with different customs .One of them is batak marriage. Batak having customs in marriage such as the marriage with marga. But, mingling culture which occurs because some residents indonesia settle in a new place for the reason of education and work to be the reason of the marriage tribal. Acculturation this culture bring up a new phenomenon of the marriage of batak without the giving of marga. This research aims to described how the identity of the negotiations being made on mixed couples who make wedding without of marga and how the married couples who make weddings without giving marga interpret the giving of marga. This research refers to the interpretative paradigm with the method of phenomenology. The subject of this research is three pairs of mixture ( batak and the others ) that born and raised from outside of north sumatera who performs marriage without the giving of marga. A theory that used in this research is a theory of the identity of the negotiations by Stella Ting Toomey The result of this research indicates that the identity of Batak in some of the informants has faded because they are no longer holding strong Batak culture .Waning of Batak cultural values because the three informants have long lived outside of north sumatera even most of them were born and raised outside of north sumatera. Lack of exposure and cultivation of batak culture in some infomants is also one of the reasons for the fading of batak identity in the informant .The idea of marriage with marga tend to be ignored by three informants because most of informants live in a family that has a cultural differences. The family informants are very open and accept the differences that exist. The three informants tried to negotiate identity by opposing the existing identity and trying to redefine the existing identity. The negotiations conducted by the three informants will run more easily if supported by a pattern of communication and a good relationship pattern. The communication pattern formed in the three family of informants is a fluid communication pattern in which the family applies an active and circular communication pattern. Negotiations can also run well if they have mutually supportive relationship in the family so that every decision taken gets a positive response.
