Abstract

Excessive emotional instability and anxiety become one of the risk factors which cause a difficulty for nurses in administering infusions. This situation can have an impact on the occurrence of phlebitis infections. The incidence of phlebitis is influenced by the level of knowledge of nurses, handwashing compliance and clinic supervision of the head of hospital units. This study aimed to explore the heads of unit’s clinical supervision experiences of restorative function in the infusion administration in Tegal General Hospital. This study used a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. The samples were 10 participants recruited using purposive sampling, which consisted of five heads of hospital units as the main participants, and one head of the nursing division, one team leader and the staff nurses as the triangulation participants. The data were collected using in-depth interviews with semi-structured questions, and analyzed by using inductive content analysis. The results obtained five themes related to the heads of unit’s clinical supervision in restorative function, including: (1) patient identification, (2) emotional stability, (3) nurse relationship, (4) problem or conflict solving, and (5) procedures and right efforts as well as positive hopes needed to overcome the obstacles and complications of infusion administration. This study concluded that the clinical supervision of restorative function could ease the identification of patients, maintain the nurses’ emotional stability, improve nurse relationships and provide solutions to solving problems or conflicts.
