Abstract

Ulya, Lathifatul. 2017. “ The Form and Function of Metropolitan City Youth Slang Language (Case Study of Slang Language Use by Student of SMA 66 Jakarta)” Thesis (S-1) Faculty of Cultural Science Diponegoro University of Semarang. Supervisor I Drs. Suharyo, M.Hum, Supervisor II Dra. Sri Puji Astuti, M.Pd. The appearance of language variation depends on the social and cultural context of the region. Language variations appear in the same language patterns, which these patterns can be analyzed descriptively and limited by the meanings used by speakers to communicate. The language used by teenagers is known as slang language. Teenagers are trying to create more effective communication for them as a characteristic of their group. One of the use of slang language by teenagers in metropolitan city high school can be found in SMA Negeri 66 Jakarta. The purpose of this study is to describe the form of slang language based on sound changes, word formation and language usage function. This research uses qualitative approach. The research stages are; data collection using participatory observation, structured interview and questionnaire. Data analysis using the Agih method and then described using the theory of phonology, morphology, change of meaning, onomatope and language functions. Data presentation techniques in this research use informal and formal methods. Based on the results of this study, slang language formation can be classified into several categories; based on changes in sound including (1) metathesis, (2) reduction, (3) hypercorrect, and (4) adaptation. Based on word formation include (1) morphological processes, (2) addition and insertion of phonemes / syllables, (3) acronyms, (4) abbreviations and (5) mining. The study also found a process based on (1) change in meaning, (2) onomatopoeia, (3) language borrowing (adoption), and (4) new words. The functions of language use include the functions of (1) emotive, (2) conative,(3) referential, and (4) phatic functions.
