Abstract

Four diets containing equal protein, nitrogen free extract (NFE), lipid, and energy/protein (E/P) ratio with supplementation of yeast-chromium containing four level of Cr+3 diet, i.e. 0, 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 ppm were used in this experiment. The fish fed on diet Cr+3 1.5 ppm was able to utilize dietary carbohydrate more effectively and produce greater daily growth rate than the one fed on diet Cr+3 0 ppm (control). The peak point of blood glucose level of diet Cr+3 1.5p pm was found at 3 hours postprandial. Prolonged peak point occurred for diets Cr+3 3.0, 4.5, and 0 ppm, which were found at 4, 7, and 11 hours postprandial, respectively. The respiratory quotient (RQ) values and total ammonia excretion of diet Cr+3 1.5 ppm indicated that dietary carbohydrate was metabolized effectively as energy source and dietary protein was utilized efliciently for body protein deposit instead of nitrogenous waste product. It was suggested that supplementation of yeast-chromium containing Cr+3 1.5 ppm was considered as an optimum level for producing greater weight gain in giant gouramy (Osphronemus gouramy).
