Abstract
The abstinence expression used by the Selimbau Malay community is an interesting linguistic phenomenon to be studied. Abstinence banned is a cultural treasure that has its own uniqueness and uniqueness. In abstinence there is a moral message that is very meaningful in the life of society. Basically, prohibition is prohibited to have certain purpose and purpose for social life. This study aimed to describe the meaning and function of abstinence forbids expressions of Malay society Selimbau, Kapuas Hulu. This research is qualitative descriptive with primary data directly from Kapuas Hulu Malay society living in Selimbau area. Based on the results of the analysis it can be concluded that the expression of abstinence prohibited in Selimbau Malay society has an explicit meaning and implied. The implied meaning in the expression of abstinence forbids consists of the meaning of the phrase abstinence forbidden by safety of life, the meaning of the expression of abstinence forbids based safety time, the meaning of the phrase abstinence banned by the place, the meaning of the expression of abstinence forbids based activity, meaning the expression of abstinence forbids based on the child's age, the meaning of the phrase Abstinence is prohibited by pregnancy. The expression of abstinence forbids also serves as a social and cultural doctrine, reproof, and counsel. As an oral tradition that grows and develops in a society makes abstinence forbids have a pretty special position of Malay society Selimbau, namely as a guide of life and guidance in doing something.
