KAJIAN PRAGMATIK KESANTUNAN BERBAHASA ANTARA NAJWA SHIHAB DAN PRESIDEN JOKO WIDODO

Abstract

This paper is a research report on the analysis of utterances produced by Joko Widodo asthe President of Republic of Indonesia and Najwa Shihab as the interviewer in the programof Mata Najwa (the eyes of Najwa) broadcasted on a national private television from theperspectives of pragmatic forces and politeness principles. The utterances werequalitatively taken from the episode of “Di Balik Dinding Istana” (Beyond the PalaceWalls) by considering their context and nonverbal aspects. The results of this researchshow that the utterances in the conversational interview are organized in terms of opening,involving in, and closing. In answering the questions of Najwa, Joko Widodo appliespoliteness strategies by using certain markers. This indicates that as President he does notbreak the principles of politeness, and by doing so, he is trying to keep the situation ofIndonesia conducive and stable. It is also evident that the utterances of Joko Widodo givegreat effects to his listeners. Although many of his policies are considered by some peopleas efforts to create a good image, Joko Widodo’s utterances contain extraordinarypragmatic forces and high politeness. For the reason, the utterances can evoke the emotion,sympathy, and persuasion of those who listen to them.
