Abstract

Recent research on Austronesian languages showed that adverbial verb is a particular feature in Formosan languages, which belongs to Western Austronesian Languages (Chang, 2010). Uniquely, this feature is also found in Balinese language, a language in Indonesian Archipelago, which also belongs to Austronesian languages, but under different subgroups. According to Adelaar (2005) Balinese language belongs to Malayo-Sumbawan subgroup. This research is focused on describing manner adverbial verbs in Balinese. A manner Adverbial verb is a verb, which functions as a manner adverbial in a clause. This unique feature cannot be found in every language just like verbs or nouns that are easily identified in any language. The data used in this research are written and spoken language. Written data are collected from several Balinese short stories, while spoken data are collected from Balinese speaker by using observation and elicitation method. By using morphological and syntactic theories, there are several problems to be solved in this research. Those are 1) morphological proccess of manner adverbial verbs; 2) word order of the clause which contains manner adverbial verbs; 3) the construction of the verbs which is modified by manner adverbial verbs. Preliminary research of manner adverbial verbs in Balinese showed that manner adverbial verbs are usually derived from temporal or spatial adverbials, and also from adjectives.
