GRAMMATICAL INTERFERENCE IN TRANSLATING PROCEDURAL TEXT DONE BY THE STUDENTS OF ARTHA WACANA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

Abstract

This study focuses on the problem of the classification of grammatical interferences that occurred in students’ translation of their procedural text. While observing the process of doing the translation done by the students it is noticed the influence of language interference occurred in doing the translation. It is believedthat grammatical interference is one of the fundamental difficulties faced by the students in translating the source text (ST) into target text (TT).To describe the way of interference appeared in students’ translation, this study was classified as descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained by asking directly to the students to translate the procedural text.The data were analyzed by reading the whole translation, determining the words which are have the grammatical interference and the last is describing the data by considering the syntactic pattern of English and Indonesian. The result shows that there were two types of grammatical interference such as syntactic interference in the level of phrase example: (ST) Product registration (TT) registrasi produk should be produk registrasi, while in the level of sentence such as; (ST) For entering data into your computer (TT) untuk memasukan data ke kamu komputer should be untuk memasukan data ke komputer mu, morphological interference example (ST) jump to the next media file (TT) lompat ke file media berikutnya should be melompat ke file media berikutnya. Because Indonesian and English have different patterns in particular phrase level and sentence level, thus it influences the interference in Indonesian. Besides that, the verb construction in English doesn’t need the inflectional morphology to make the sentence clear as the Indonesian language.
