Abstract

The Old Man and The Sea is Hemingway’s masterpiece novel. The novel tells about an old man named Santiago who is struggling hard in sea to bring a giant fish back home. His journey in the sea shows a strong character he has in this novel. The character seized by most readers is his heroic spirit. Besides, Santiago is also remarkable for his lovable personality. This phenomenon had encouraged researchers to conduct studies concerning Santiago’s characterization. Most of the studies, however, were carried out using psychological and literary perspective. Those studies are not provided with linguistic evidences to support the justifications. This research is therefore digging up for a gap by examining the characterization of Santiago using SFL approach, particularly Appraisal theory. Appraisal is considerably chosen as it can systemically scrutinize the characterization, particularly his emotion, personality, and physical condition.
