Abstract
This paper described the language choice used in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools)environment, namely Al-Itqon Pesantren, Bugen, Semarang. This research belongs todescriptive-qualitative research. The data of the research were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences used by speakers in the pesantren. The data were takenfrom February to June 2016 and collected by recording and noting techniques. Next, theywere classified and analyzed by means of a contextual approach. The results of analysisshowed that the language choice in the traditional pesantren was local language(Javanese), Indonesian, and foreign language (Arabic).
