Abstract

ABSTRACT Khambali, Sekar Dini Putri. 2017. "Personalities of Two Main Characters and Morality Values in the Utsukushisa to Kanashimi to Novel by Yasunari Kawabata: A Study of Psychological Literature and Sociology Literature". Thesis, Japanese Literature, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Advisor Nur Hastuti, S.S., M.Hum. The purposes of this study are to reveal the intrinsic elements in the Utsukushisa to Kanashimi to novel, the personalities of the two main characters and moral values, Otoko and Keiko in the Utsukushisa to Kanashimi to novel. This research uses novel as the object of study with the title Utsukushisa to Kanashimi to. This research uses literary research method to obtain data. It also uses morality values, Nurgiyantoro’s structural theory and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory. Structural theory is used to describe the storyline in the novel, the theory of sociology literature is used to reveal morality values and the theory of psychological literature is used to reveal the personalities of the two main characters who exhibit deviant sexual behavior which is lesbian. The results of this study indicate that according to the morality values, Otoko's personality has many praiseworthy traits such as brave, sincere, preventing crime, and diligent. However. Some of Otoko's personalities are dominated by Id. Keiko has many antagonistic, stubborn and aggressive personalities that are also dominated by Id.
