Abstract

Background: Food consumption was necessary to maintain individual health, especially in the elderly. In old age has been variety of setbacks in the function of organs of the body, therefore the elderly easy to got diseases such as hypertension. Hypertension in the elderly was caused by stiffness in the arteries so that blood pressure tends to increase. Objective: to describe the type and frequency of foods consumption in elderly with hypertension. Methods: survey descriptive. The number of sample was 111 samples of elderly. The sample collecting technique was purposive sampling. Results: showed that the preventive foods of hypertensions which the most eaten by elderly kinds of vegetables was cucumbers (28.8% often), fruits was bananas (9.95% very often), fish was freshwater fish (2.7% often) and nuts was mung beans (16.2% average). The trigger foods of hypertensions which the most eaten by elderly kinds high of cholesterols was yolk (32.4% occasional), high of sodium and preservative foods are soy sauce (32.4% average) and salted egg (5.4% average), and milks was full cream milk (7.2% rarely). Suggestions:for the elderly and their family to more understand about the suitable dietary for elderly with hypertension, so it could increase the elderly health.
