Abstract

ABSTRACT Kurniasang, Rika Aprilia. “Representation of The Hero’s Journey Theory in Manga Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi” by Sanbe Kei, Thesis, Japanese Literature, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Supervisor Zaki Ainul Fadli, M.Hum. Ever since Joseph Campbell’s theory of Hero’s Journey is published, the life journey of heroes in many literary works has long been studied by many researchers. Likewise, this research would study Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi, a comic by Sanbe Kei that told the story about its main character, Fujinuma Satoru, as a hero. The purpose of this research is to analyze how far Satoru can be depicted as hero through his life using hero’s journey pattern. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative methode and literature study. It’s analyzed with structural and heroism theory. The structural theory used to analyze the elements that constructed the story, that is the intrinsic. Meanwhile the heroism theory is used to analyze the repsentation of the main character as a hero in manga Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi. Based on the research, the writer found that Fujinuma Satoru’s life story as a hero, is connected with the theory of Hero’s Journey. From there the writer can conclude that Satoru is a hero. There are few differences that has been found within the story’s sequences and the Hero’s Journey pattern. For example, the Return phase where The Magic Flight happens is earlier in the story, than the Initiation phase. However that is not a significant point to change Satoru’s Heroism. The conclusion of this research is that Satoru can be depicted as a hero based of his life journey that followed the theory of Hero’s Journey pattern. Lastly, the Hero’s Journey theory is usually used to analyze fantasy story and legend, but as this research has tested, it can be used to analyze modern literature as well with a little modification to it.
