Abstract

ABSTRACT Handayani, Novi. 2017. “Plotting and Characterization in Novel Umibe no Kafuka by Haruki Murakami”. Thesis of Japanese Department Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University, Semarang. This research focuses on plotting and characterization in the novel Umibe no Kafuka which was published in 2002. The research object is the plotting and characterization in the novel Umibe no Kafuka by Haruki Murakami. Umibe no Kafuka has two different plots in one story. Each telling about two important characters Kafka Tamura and Satoru Nakata, both plots seem independent and not associated to each other. Nevertheless, the two plots overlap forming one whole story frame. This research aims to describe the plotting and characterization in the novel. To analyze the plot, the method used is plotting stage by Tasrif in the book of Kajian Fiksi (Fiction Study) which divides plot into five main parts: 1) Setting-up stage, 2) Emergence of conflict stage, 3) Escalation of conflict stage, 4) Climax stage, and 5) Resolution stage. Meanwhile, to describe the characterization aspect, the researcher used characterization theory: direct method (showing) and indirect method (telling) as written in Metode Karakterisasi Telaah Fiksi (Fiction Characterization Analysis Method) by Albertine Miderop. This research reveals the association between Kafka Tamura’s story side and Satoru Nakata’s. In addition to that, there is similar aspect that affects the character of Kafka Tamura as well as Satoru Nakata. That same aspect is the traumatic state suffered by both Tamura and Nakata which trigger the act of self-defense. Keywords: plotting, characterization, Umibe no Kafuka
