Abstract

Ambiguity of pronoun reference in sentence structure can be occurred. To avoid it, there are some generalizations that we should take it into account in syntactic aspect. There are four general statements in antecedent that is analyzed in this study, a pronominal and its antecedent cannot be in the same local domain, pronominal can follow its antecedent but it can only precede its antecedent if the pronominal is in a lower ranked clause, the predicate in the container clause thus controls which of the container arguments is to be the antecedent of the covert noun phrase and anaphor must be bound within its local domain. The generalizations of antecedent are very important in comprehending the sentence. The purposes of this study are to analyze and describe the antecedent in sentence structure. The results of the study show that the general statements of antecedent can determine the pronominal and its antecedent in a sentence. It is really helpful especially for EFL students in comprehending the English sentences.
