BAHASA SEBAGAI REPRESENTASI KEKUASAN KOLONIAL TERHADAP MASYARAKAT PRIBUMI (Studi pada Novel Jawa Prakemerdekaan Terbitan Balai Pustaka)

Abstract

There is a relation of Orient, marginal, inferior, object and the Occident, central, superior, subject in the contact between the Dutch colonial and the indigeneous. The relation is seen as political policy representation of Dutch government in order to maintain the power as the colonialist to the colonialized. One of the power relation practices is in the Javanese novel published by Balai Pustaka. Through the works in Javanese language, the colonial government uses the language as the tool to picture the indigenous as the backward or conservative, rude, fraudulent, lazy, unobjective, stupid, gambler, drunker, disharmony or tend to be at odds people, and so on. Those are not the natural characters of the Javanese. Those characters are labelized and arranged by the Dutch colonial to the indigenous. The negative characters are represented in the relation of the Dutch clononial to the indigenous as they do the power domination practice so that the colonialized people seen it as the example of the advance and modern Western life. As the result, through the use of language and literature, the indigenous is formed to have role as the object and the disciple—even as slave—who need to learn or urge for guidance from the West who has positioned theirselves as the teacher or subject. In that way, the study of the literature from the Dutch colonial government era is never complete without relating it to the function of language and literature as a media to maintaining the political power of the Ducth colonial. Reading Balai Pustaka Javanese novel of pre-independence era, such as Sukaca (1923), Suwarso-Warsiyah (1926), Wisaning Agesang (1928), and Pameleh (1938), Katresnan (1920), Pepisahanan Pitu Likur Taun (1929), Mungsuh Munggwing Cangklakan (1929), and Gambar Mbabar Wewados (1932) would never reach to the comprehensive level of understanding without relating it to the function of the language and literature as the media to practice the power relation. Dalam relasi masyarakat pribumi-kolonial Belanda adalah hubungan antara the Orient, marginal, inferior, dan objek dengan the Occident, central, superior, dan subjek. Relasi itu sebagai representasi kebijakan politik pemerintah kolonial dalam melanggengkan kekuasaan sebagai penjajah atas masyarakat terjajah, yang salah satunya melalui pemanfaatan novel Jawa terbitan Balai Pustaka. Melalui karya bermedia bahasa Jawa itu, pemerintah kolonial memanfaatkan bahasa sebagai alat untuk mendeskripsikan masyarakat pribumi sebagai masyarakat yang terbelakang atau kolot, kasar, curang, pemalas, tidak objektif, bodoh, penjudi, peminum, disharmoni atau cenderung berselisih, dan sebagainya. Karakter masyarakat seperti itu sebagai bentuk pelabelan yang direncanakan oleh kolonial Belanda terhadap pribumi dan bukan sebagai karakter alamiah masyarakat Jawa. Dalam relasi kolonial Belanda dan pribumi, pengambaran karakter secara negatif itu sebagai sebuah dominasi agar masyarakat terjajah mencontoh atau meladani serta meniru cara hidup Barat yang harus dipandangnya sebagai karakter modern atau maju. Akibatnya, melalui pemanfaatan bahasa dan sastra masyarakat pribumi dibentuk untuk berperan sebagai objek sekaligus muridi—bahkan budak--yang harus belajar atau memerlukan bimbingan dari Barat yang memposisikan diri sebagai guru atau subjek.
